North Smithfield is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island with approximately 11,500residents. The town was originally settled as a farming community in the mid17th century and has been incorporated since 1871. The town is made up of several villages, including the historic Slatersville—which is America’s first planned industrial village.
Many of North Smithfield’s attractions are historical such as Wright’s Dairy Farm which has been selling Rhode Islanders local products since 1914. The farm is family owned and operated and everything is made right on the property.
North Smithfield is also home to Rhode Island’s only DriveIn movie theater which has been open since 1951. The Rustic Tri Vue DriveIn is open yearly from late April through late September. Residents of North Smithfield enjoy many historical attractions as well as refurbished historical real estate. Unique to the town is the “Old Tupperware mill” that was built in 1904 and has been converted into condominiums. However, more traditional homes are for sale in contemporary styles such as Cape and Colonial.
North Smithfield has suburban character but has not lost its innate rural and historical qualities.
Slatersville is by most accounts the heart of the community, with its prim white houses and perfect picket fences all in a row. Complementing this image, however, is the fact that the very beginning of America’s Industrial Revolution belongs to Slatersville, as America’s “First planned industrial city”. While other parts of Rhode Island also possess a mill town character to them, North Smithfield’s Slatersville was the original. The town’s history has been preserved with care, all the while allowing for modern development and services, including all the necessary stores and restaurants for in-town errand running. Some mills have been converted into upscale housing and many of North Smithfield’s historic farms have become homes.
North Smithfield is made up of the villages of Branch Village, Crystal Lake, Forestdale, Primrose, Slatersville, Union Village, Waterford, Woonsocket Hill.
